For the refurbishment of its production facility roof, Plastica Nardon selected MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE, a tested membrane combining resistance to both hail and external fire with long-term durability.

Protecting industrial buildings against extreme weather events is now a strategic priority.
Against this backdrop, Plastica Nardon – a long-established company based in the province of Vicenza, specialising in injection moulding of plastic components for industrial applications – has recently completed the refurbishment of 3,000 m² of roofing at its production facility. The company selected a high-performance waterproofing solution designed to provide enhanced resistance to weathering and, in particular, hail impact. The project involved the use of MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE bituminous membranes and COPER SOLAR FIBER FR liquid-applied membrane.

Hail: from exceptional event to tangible risk

In recent years, severe hailstorms affecting numerous areas of Northern Italy have turned what was once an occasional phenomenon into an increasingly frequent threat to buildings and industrial assets. Industrial roofs are among the building elements most exposed to these events, with the risk of damage, water ingress and consequent disruption to business operations.

Plastica Nardon’s choice was driven by the need to enhance the safety and operational continuity of its production facility through a high-performance solution designed to withstand hail impact.

Protecting the roof goes beyond routine maintenance: it represents a strategic investment in safeguarding facilities, production processes and people.

A roof designed to withstand extreme weather events

MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE is a membrane that combines the properties of APAO and SBS membranes through the exclusive Multi-Flex Technology, delivering high durability, waterproofing performance and mechanical resistance.

The product has successfully passed the hail resistance test specified by EN 13583, maintaining its integrity even when impacted by simulated hailstones travelling at speeds of up to 180 km/h. This performance is complemented by the BROOF(t2) classification for resistance to external fire.

Thanks to the combination of a triple-compound formulation, high-strength reinforced carrier and slate-flake surface protection, the product provides effective protection against hail, weathering and mechanical stresses, helping to preserve the integrity of the building envelope over time.

Roof details, such as skylight upstands and bases, were waterproofed and finished using COPER SOLAR FIBER FR, an elastomeric fibre-reinforced liquid-applied membrane, also classified BROOF(t2) in accordance with UNI EN 13501-5.

This performance, combined with the product’s waterproofing and self-extinguishing properties, made it possible to create continuous connections and finishes in continuity with the roofing system, ensuring high standards of safety and durability.

Technical insight:
THE EXCLUSIVE MFT (Multi-Flex Technology)

MFT is the ideal range for high-performance applications and comprises five product lines – MFT MONO, MFT PRO, MFT TECH, MFT PLUS and MFT EVO – each featuring three different compound combinations designed to meet a wide range of performance and cost requirements.

What is MFT Multi-Flex Technology?

Multi-Flex Technology – MFT – is an innovative technology developed by Copernit that combines, in a single product, the key advantages of APAO/APP compound membranes and SBS compound membranes, together with a special coating in the intermediate layer based on a revolutionary elastoplastomeric compound.

MFT membranes consist of three different compounds within a single membrane thickness, corresponding to the three membrane layers: top surface, intermediate layer and bottom surface.

At the heart of MFT innovation is the special compound used in the intermediate layer, developed in Copernit’s laboratories. This exclusive technology enables all the components of the membrane to be perfectly integrated, creating a solid and homogeneous structure. The result is a high-performance product in which each layer works in perfect synergy to provide greater reliability, resistance and long-term durability.

The properties of the three different compounds and their specific positioning within MFT membranes enable their application and use in the most demanding conditions, where maximum low-temperature flexibility and UV protection are required.

FAQ

What is MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE?

MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE is a multi-layer polymer-bitumen membrane for waterproofing roofing systems. MFT technology combines different compounds: an APAO top layer, a specific intermediate layer designed to ensure complete compatibility between the different layers, and an SBS bottom layer, reinforced with a 250 g/m² spunbond polyester reinforced carrier.

What types of roofs can MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE be used on?

MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE is designed for roof waterproofing and is suitable for single-layer systems and applications requiring hail resistance and a BROOF(t2) classification for external fire exposure. Compatibility with the substrate, insulation and system build-up must be verified against the relevant system technical documentation.

How is hail resistance tested?

MFT PRO 25 B-FIRE has been tested in accordance with EN 13583. During testing, the membrane maintained its integrity at an impact velocity of 50 m/s, equivalent to 180 km/h, on both rigid and soft substrates.

What does the BROOF(t2) classification mean?

BROOF(t2) identifies the classification of the performance of roof coverings when exposed to external fire, in accordance with EN 13501-5. It is essential to consider that the classification applies to the tested roofing system and its relevant field of application; therefore, it cannot automatically be extended to any roof build-up.
